Where do you get the broken pipe error message from that you mentioned
in your original email?

I'm interested in which files are in that directory.  Can you give us a
list and their contents please?

The pubring.mix should contain only one remailer, can you do the
following as the echolot user (whoever that is)

| export MIXPATH=/var/lib/echolot/mix
| /var/lib/mix/mixmaster -m -S -l <thenameoftheremailerinpubring.mix>

and tell us what it does?
